A deer in the woods past the first road crossing, goats and a big flock of geese on the face of the dam, and the new bridge across the Chattahoochee below the dam is finished. Early on, the footbridge into the fern-lined side branch has been out for years (a tree took it). Jump across or go around through the power easement and along the road. Where that detour rejoins, walk past the restricted-area sign and the automatic gate to the crosswalk. After the road crossing at the crosswalk: more exposed roots and granite, slippery when wet. The beach's auxiliary lot also reaches the trail, but it is often closed. Heading back up to the road, the path through the power easement is narrow and rocky and overgrows in the lush seasons. Check for ticks. Two crossings of a busy two-lane road, about halfway and near the end going clockwise. Cars speed despite the speed humps. Across the busy road, the trail drops to a stream with a couple of bridges. The bridge is not in good shape: watch your step, more so under fall and winter leaves. A couple of trees down across the trail beside the stream, there for some time. The tree across the railroad tracks near the carving is still down after more than two weeks, so the train has not run. The tree over the trail west of the carving still makes its crooked arch. Low cloud on the walk-up trail meant wet granite, so I turned at base camp. Tall grass past the walk-up trail: check for ticks. Water a little low after a dry week. A tree that's fallen across the tracks near the carving is still there more than two weeks later, which means the train also hasn't run for those three weeks since the tree first fell. West of the carving, the tree that fell over the trail about two months ago is still there. Past the hike-up trail, there is a lot of overgrown grass on the path, so always make sure you're wearing tick repellent.
