Cherokee Trail, Stone Mountain

9.2 mi, 1,078 ft, sunrise 7:49 AM, clear, 47°F

Completely clear sky, some color at sunrise but no clouds to speak of. The tree that blocked the trail last weekend has been cut up and moved to the side. Geese in the morning and deer around, the buck with the big antlers among them, though it kept running off before I could get a good picture. Around Indian Island first, then up to the top of the mountain.

  • 3rd slowest pace of 120 timed hikes, 22:35 /mi.
  • Sunrise 17 minutes later than on October 2, 2026.
  • 14°F cooler than the median of 163 logged hikes.
A cloudless sky three minutes before sunrise, deep blue overhead fading to a band of gold and orange along the far treeline, a wooded island with a few red trees mirrored in the still lake

On Me

What I Wore

  • Shorts and a merino wool T-shirt as usual, with the vest over them to go around Indian Island.
  • Took the vest off after the island.
  • Put the wool beanie on about halfway up the mountain to keep my head and ears warm.

Written from that morning's notes, and nothing they do not say. The pieces are on the gear page.

In My Ears

What I Was Listening To

  • The Invincible by Stanisław Lem. About 67% to 90% of the way through.

From Audible's listening time for the day, which does not say which book: the book comes from the order I heard them in, and how far through it is an estimate. How it is worked out.

On the Trail

Trail Conditions

  • On the north side of the mountain, a little over half a mile past the Grist Mill, the tree that was down across the trail last weekend has been cleared. The pieces that blocked the trail are cut up and moved to the side, where they will probably stay.

Written from that morning's notes, one line for each thing they say about the trail, and nothing the notes do not say. What the notes did not mention is not here.
