Cherokee Trail, Stone Mountain

8.4 mi, 664 ft, sunrise 7:43 AM, scattered, 50°F

The first properly cool morning, and a windy one. I walked the first leg, around Indian Island, in a vest and a beanie for the wind chill, then took the vest off and kept the beanie for my ears. A large tree is down across the trail, with an easy way around it. Herman the heron, a flock of geese and a buck with the biggest antlers I have photographed, bagpipes in the background over the wind, and a line at the main gate back to Highway 78 for the day's events.

  • 25th slowest pace of 119 timed hikes, 21:33 /mi.
  • Sunrise 16 minutes later than on September 26, 2026.
  • 11°F cooler than the median of 162 logged hikes.
A clear sky before sunrise, blue overhead fading to a band of yellow and orange along the far treeline across the lake, wind ripples on the water and a bare branch reaching in at the right

On Me

What I Wore

  • A vest and a beanie for the first leg, around Indian Island, mostly for the wind chill.
  • Took the vest off once I was around the island and kept the beanie on for my ears.

Written from that morning's notes, and nothing they do not say. The pieces are on the gear page.

In My Ears

What I Was Listening To

  • The Invincible by Stanisław Lem. About 42% to 67% of the way through.

From Audible's listening time for the day, which does not say which book: the book comes from the order I heard them in, and how far through it is an estimate. How it is worked out.

What I Saw

From the Notes

A large fallen trunk lying along the left side of a wooden boardwalk, its leafy crown and branches piled across the path ahead, green grass and scattered fall leaves beneath
A pretty large tree came down over the trail on the north side of the mountain, a little over half a mile past the Grist Mill. There is an easy path around it, which will probably become the new path if they don't clear it out soon.

On the Trail

Trail Conditions

  • On the north side of the mountain, a little over half a mile past the Grist Mill toward the carving, a large tree is down across the trail by a boardwalk. There is an easy way around it, which will likely become the path if it is not cleared soon.

Written from that morning's notes, one line for each thing they say about the trail, and nothing the notes do not say. What the notes did not mention is not here.
