Cherokee Trail, Stone Mountain

8.0 mi, 382 ft, sunrise 7:38 AM, overcast, 61°F

The day after Hurricane Isaias came through, under low cloud across the whole sky and a sprinkle the whole time. Some of the trail is flooded in places, nothing extreme, and the lake is not as brown as it usually gets after a big storm. Streams that are normally dry are running, and the channel between Venable Lake and Stone Mountain Lake is quick. A couple of trees down; a big one across Loop Road by the Venable Lake entrance has the area closed off, with the chainsaws already at it.

  • 12th slowest pace of 118 timed hikes, 22:14 /mi.
  • Sunrise 15 minutes later than on September 20, 2026.
Low gray cloud over the lake at sunrise, a thin band of yellow at the horizon on the right, and the wooded far shore across rippled water.

On the Trail

Trail Conditions

  • Some stretches of trail flooded, nothing extreme.
  • Streams that are normally dry are running, and the Venable Lake outlet is fast.
  • A couple of trees down. A big one across Loop Road by the Venable Lake entrance had the area closed off while crews cleared it.

Written from that morning's notes, one line for each thing they say about the trail, and nothing the notes do not say. What the notes did not mention is not here.
