Cherokee Trail, Stone Mountain

9.6 mi, 487 ft, sunrise 7:31 AM, overcast, 68°F

Rain is due Saturday and Sunday, so I went a day early, around Indian Island at the start and again at the end. Overcast at sunrise, low cloud across the whole sky and no color in it. They finally cleared the tree over the railroad tracks near the carving, about four weeks after it fell. A box turtle in the leaves, the yellow daisy in bloom and three mallards on the water.

  • 43rd slowest pace of 117 timed hikes, 20:55 /mi.
  • Sunrise 18 minutes later than on September 6, 2026.
  • 7°F warmer than the median of 147 logged hikes.
An unbroken gray overcast over Stone Mountain Lake four minutes before sunrise, a wooded island and the far shore in full green, the still water holding the gray sky and the trees, the shallows clear in front
